Big, Beautiful Threads Supply List

Using decorative big threads is the focus in this class. Big threads will be stitched through the needle, in the bobbin, and couched. Skills learned can then be used on stabilized fabric or quilt sandwiches to take advantage of many beautiful threads. Students may opt to make bookmarks with their decorated strips at home. (Machines without removable bobbin cases have limited success with decorative bobbin threads.)

A zig-zag machine is a must, but a “top-of-the-line” model is not necessary.

Thread kits will be available for purchase for about $23. Thread prices vary depending on what's included. Each kit contains two decorative needle threads, two decorative bobbin threads and two couchers.
  • Thread kit will be available for about $23. See note above.
  • Fabric: three or four 4" strips of solid or almost solid fabric about 22" in length. If you're purchasing a pre-ordered thread kit in class, I suggest navy or black fabric.
  • Spray starch: bring to class or starch fabric at home
  • Fusible medium-weight interfacing: ... Fuse strips to back of fabric before or after cutting into strips
  • If you do not wish to purchase a thread kit in class, please bring at least two threads from each category: NEEDLE THREADS: YLI Jeans Stitch, YLI 1000 denier silk, Sulky 12 wt cotton, pearl cotton size 12. BOBBIN THREADS: YLI Designer 6, Madeira Decor, YLI Pearl Crown Rayon, pearl cotton size 8, rayon ribbon floss. COUCHING THREADS: chenille, boucle’, eyelash
  • Regular weight cotton threads (50 or 60 wt) to coordinate with your decorative threads OR fabric
  • Empty spool(s) if you have thread in a skein or are purchasing thread kit in class
  • Small thread clips or scissors, seam ripper
  • Small bag for scraps/threads
  • Pencil for note taking
Guild sponsored classes require that you bring your own sewing machine. Some quilt shows, however, arrange for sewing machine companies to provide machines. Please check with the class organizer to determine if a machine will be provided or if one may be rented. If you're using a provided machine the following items are not needed, but if you're bringing your own machine please also bring the following:
  • Sewing machine, power cord, extension cord, foot pedal, and manual
  • Sewing machine needles: Jeans/Denim or Universal size 70/10, AND Topstitch size 90/14 or 100/16
  • Extra bobbin case (optional but highly recommended)
  • Slotted throat plate for your machine (not single hole) so decorative stitches may be stitched
  • Extra bobbins (at least 2)
  • Small screw driver for adjusting obbin tension
  • Bed extension for your machine if you have one (very desirable)
