Marvelous Miters
Why fear the Y-seam? Choose a wonderful print
to "frame" and learn a marvelous
technique for mitering sashing and borders
while making a few blocks in class. Your
fabric will be cut to showcase it's motif
and frame size will be your choice. You may
also decide how many different frame fabrics
to use. Individual help will be given to
everyone who would like the advice. Accuracy
will be taught and emphasized. Several variations
will be discussed so you'll have skills to
design your own frames, sashing and borders
with perfect miters!

Main fabric: red burst
Frame fabric 1: dark indigo print
Frame fabric 2: light indigo print
Accent fabric: navy |
|

Main fabric: beach babe
Frame fabric 1: orange pollka dot
Frame fabric 2: green strip(ish)
Accent fabric: none
|
|

Main fabric: cowboy/cowgirl
Frame fabrics 1&2: green wiggly stripe
Accent fabric: black with barbed wire |
Fabric choices:
Choose one fabric with a motif you'd like
to frame such as a novelty print, large floral,
damask, or an appliqued piece. Motifs may
be from 3" to 9", square or rectangular,
then choose two to three fabrics to frame
this piece. One may be an accent fabric that
is high contrast to the other framing fabric(s).
Please avoid plaids or perfect stripes, but
wiggly stripes or skinny stripes of many
colors are great.
Fabric requirements: Fabric requirements are based on fabric 40”-44”
wide. Most students will finish 3-4 blocks
in class. Your main fabric will be cut to
showcase it's motif and the frame width will
be your choice. So...fabric requirements
depend on the finished size of your block
and how many blocks you'd like to make.
- If you'd like to bring scraps to just learn
the technique without starting a
project,
that's fine.
- It's difficult to specify exact yardages
because everyone's main fabric motif and
frames will be different sizes. The following
are only suggestions.
- Main fabric: 1/2 - 1 yd depending on how
many blocks you'd like to make in class
- Frame fabric 1: 1/2 - 1 yd depending on how
many blocks you'd like to make in class
- Frame fabric 2: 1/2 - 1 yd depending on how
many blocks you'd like to make in
class
- Accent fabric: 1/2 yd (optional)
