There are two big challenges with the scant 1/4” seam allowance. Both are addressed in the Secrets of Impeccable Piecing as well as a myriad of other tips and tricks!
1) On nearly all machines, when we piece, our fabric is not totally covering the rightmost feed dog. This makes it difficult for the machine to move fabrics straight through the machine. It’s like driving with our right wheels in the mud.
2) An accurate seam allowance is dependent on the thickness of our fabric & thread. When we press seams to one side, there’s fabric taken up in the turn of the cloth.
